Numbers 20:2-4 NLT “There was no water for the people to drink at that place, so they rebelled against Moses and Aaron.
3 The people blamed Moses and said, “If only we had died in the Lord’s presence with our brothers!
4 Why have you brought the congregation of the Lord’s people into this wilderness to die, along with all our livestock?”
In the Bible, the Israelites complained to Moses seven times after leaving Egypt, often expressing fear that they were brought into the wilderness to die. Reflect on how you may have left your old life to join the Fire Ministry and whether you resemble your ancestors who grumbled. Before Moses entered the scene, God’s people were eager to leave Egypt and be set free. However, in our human condition, we often lack the understanding and patience to grasp how God works to save His people.
Each successive complaint stemmed from the Israelites’ instincts for self-preservation and survival. Their grumbling revealed a lack of faith and trust in God, highlighting the need for a leader trained by the Holy Spirit to guide God’s people to the finish line. While the Holy Spirit is our primary guide and helper, those lacking faith often need a tangible, physical leader, such as a pastor, to anchor their response. Even mature believers require a physical servant to learn and maintain spiritual authority.
When the Israelites faced the Red Sea, they complained. When they were hungry or thirsty, they complained. In two instances, their complaints included their livestock, accusing Moses of bringing them, their children, and their livestock into the wilderness to die from hunger or thirst.
Let us consider what “livestock” means for today’s application. In modern terms, livestock may represent your jobs, education, careers, or businesses. The Israelites left Egypt wholeheartedly, bringing all their possessions, including their families and livestock. Their livestock served as food, represented wealth, and could be akin to money today.
When circumstances did not unfold as the Israelites expected, they grew weary. Their livestock likely diminished or weakened during the trials of wandering. Similarly, you and your families have joined the Fire Ministry because God called you, not because of Pastor Steve or Yoojin. Many of you left jobs, uprooted your lives, moved, parted with family, changed careers, or ventured into business. Over time, however, weariness may have set in, and it might seem that all is lost. Your dreams of success or an abundant life may appear diminished, and your spiritual “livestock”—including your families—may seem weakened or futile. How do people respond? They complain and blame others or God.
Numbers 20:4 (NIV): “Why have you brought the Lord’s community into this wilderness, that we and our livestock should die here?”
As people coming out of the world, we have expectations about being fed, given water, and keeping our “livestock” healthy. Yet, God has His own spiritual solutions. Through each test, He sought to remove the fear of man and death, guiding His people into an economy of spiritual faith. To enter God’s economy, they had to reach their physical limits without complaining. Yet, in His mercy and through Moses’ intercession, God answered. He parted the Red Sea. He sent countless quail. He provided water from a rock that traveled with them. He performed supernatural acts to teach them to trust Him. Still, they clung to their old ways, expecting worldly solutions instead of embracing the new solutions of faith.
Unless you transform into the new man, you will complain like the old man and risk dying in your sins, failing to fulfill your calling into the new world with Him!
